Student Materials

In this 25 lesson virtual phonics course, students are engaged in integrated instruction that seamlessly addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, handwriting, spelling, word work, and sounding out words.

During the course, students learn the 25 single letter alphabet phonograms and manuscript letter formation. Students are also introduced to 45 additional common phonograms (digraphs and trigraphs) used to read and write high frequency words and academic words such as she, meet, saw, day, when, that, foot, right, veil, vision, fraction.  Mastery of the code begins in this course and is completed during purposeful application in Word Study 1 lessons–the course that is subsequent to The Phonograms.

The first video in each lesson is a phonogram retrieval practice using flash cards and dictation with guided self-checking. This is followed by one or two videos that provide the introduction of “new” phonograms (usually four per lesson) with a focus on letter formation, the common sound(s), and appropriate spelling rules. Handwriting instruction and practice during introduction of each of the first 26 phonograms (alphabet) supports correct letter formation and spacing.

Lessons also include use of digraph and trigraph phonograms in selective words. Spelling rules and syllable patterns are introduced during word work and charts are created as visual records of student learning. Students also enjoy Word Finds (finding hidden words) in their phonogram dictation as they are guided in decoding practice (sounding out a word).

Lesson rituals include fun tunes and chart creation, supporting rote memory with music and purposeful visual representations of learning.

Recommended for Grade 1: Complete this course even if your student completed Letters, Sounds, Words in the previous year.

Recommended for Grade 2: If your student has not had prior systematic, explicit phonics instruction that includes the introduction of the 70 Orton phonograms, complete this course to close up knowledge gaps and build connections.
