Sentence Studies 101
follows after Grammar Boot Camp 1 & 2Sentence Studies 101
What is a fragment?
What is a run-on sentence?
What is a fused sentence?
What is a comma splice?
How can these errors be fixed?
By the end of this ten-lesson course, students will know the answers!
Student learning is guided by questions and application of grammar systematically and explicitly to identify and fix fragment and run-on errors. Students will learn
- To recognize the grammatical part that is missing in a fragment
- What a run-on sentence is and what it is not
- The three kinds of errors that cause run-on sentences
- A variety of ways to fix fragments and correct run-on sentences
Lesson 1 through Lesson 5 develop foundational knowledge about sentence fragments and run-ons. Each lesson contains 1 video with viewing times ranging from 14 minutes to 24 minutes. In Lesson 1, students add a few charts to the back of their Grammar Boot Camp notebook.
Lesson 6 through Lesson 10 are practices correcting sentence fragments and run-ons by using separation, reduction, coordination, and subordination. These lessons have 3 to 6 videos with viewing times that range from 4 minutes to 15 minutes. These lessons can be spread over several days, i.e., one lesson for a week.
Each lesson includes a 6-question retrieval practice formatted as an e-quiz. This review quiz should not be graded. It is not an assessment. Instead, the purpose of the e-quiz is to provide opportunities for students to say and hear the language of grammar (e.g., terms such as abstract nouns, verb tense, subject, predicate, phrase, clause) and to discuss their thinking. Question hints direct students to their grammar notebooks from Grammar Boot Camp to support their thinking.
Work is done in a composition notebook, a spiral notebook, or plain notebook paper in a 3-ring binder. A composition notebook is used by Alice Nine in the lesson videos.
Plan approximately 20 minutes per day; longer lessons should be scheduled across several days. Students can add this material to the back of their Grammar Boot Camp interactive notebook or begin a new notebook. Total lesson viewing times range from 14 minutes to 44 minutes per lesson.
Anchor charts for this course were created by Alice Nine. These pre-made charts, free in Sentence Studies 101, save instructional time and assure students of accuracy of information.
