The English Code

In this 25-lesson virtual phonics course, intermediate level students are engaged in seamlessly integrated instruction that addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, handwriting, spelling, word work, and sounding out words.
During the course, students review the 70 common Orton phonograms plus 9 uncommon phonograms, spelling rules, and syllable patterns. Mastery of the code (phonograms and spelling rules) begins in this course, and is completed during purposeful application in Word Study lessons–the courses that are subsequent to The English Code.
Lessons begin with a Retrieval Practice video using phonogram flash cards and dictation with guided self-checking. This is followed by a video (Phonograms) that provides the introduction of “new” phonograms (usually four per lesson) with a review of letter formation and the common sound(s). The final video is either Words or Spelling Charts. In Words videos, oral words are presented to students to sound out as they write them. In Spelling Charts videos, spelling rules are explicitly taught and practiced through application to selected words. The words used in these lessons have been chosen to practice use of the phonograms and application of spelling rules.
What is the difference between The English Code and The Phonograms?
- The pacing is different. Because students are more mature and much of this will be review, The English Code routines are a bit brisker.
- In The Phonograms, students do their work on special notebook pages; in The English Code, student do their work in a composition notebook.
- The English Code goes deeper into spelling rules and syllable rules. It also presents 9 uncommon phonograms
Recommended for grade 2: Complete this course even if your student completed The Phonograms in the previous year. If your second grade student has not had systematic, explicit phonics and does not know the 70 Orton phonogram, The Phonograms is recommended.
Recommended for grades 3-5: If your third, fourth, or fifth grade student has not had prior systematic, explicit phonics instruction that includes the introduction of the 70 Orton phonograms, complete this course to close up knowledge gaps and build connections. Or complete the course because it is a powerfully packed phonics review.
The English Code consists of:
25 Lessons (ranging from 16 to 33 minutes of video run time per lesson)
73 Student-facing videos (average 3 per lesson, 5 to 10 min run time each)
